چکیده

In this paper we apply scale mixture of Gaussian models to model ASAR AP data. The study has two objectives. First: Are multivariate scale mixture of Gaussian models adequate for describing the statistics of AP data over open sea and sea ice? Second: Does the new parameterbased feature set produced by the statistical modelling allow us to discriminate between sea and ice, and possibly between different classes of sea ice? We will compare our model based classification with a traditional intensity based classification.

The Potential of Cross-polarization Information for Operational Sea Ice Monitoring

RESUME The information content of ENVISAT ASAR alternating polarization data is evaluated with respect to operations at the Canadian Ice Service. A dual polarization data set covering an entire ice season is shown to have a higher information content compared to single polarization data. Automatic sea ice classification with dual polarization data is shown to have some potential to aid operatio...

Snow Classification Algorithm for Envisat Asar

Capabilities and methods for snow mapping in mountainous areas using the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) on board of ENVISAT were investigated. For algorithm development the backscattering signatures of snow covered and snow free surfaces in Alpine valleys and on mountain slopes were studied with ASAR data of different look angles and polarizations in comparison with field measurements...

Envisat Asar Monitoring of Polynya Processes and Sea Ice Production in the Laptev Sea

The Laptev Sea is one of the main source regions of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. Most ice forms in winter in a prominent, quasi-permanent flaw lead or polynya (region of open water), separating landfast from drifting sea ice. In winter 2003/2004 we have deployed two seafloor moorings in the polynya, equipped with sensors to continuously observe ice, water, and sediment properties. In parallel, ...

The Synergy of Ers-2 Sar and Radarsat Sar Imagery of Sea-ice from the Kara Sea

This work investigates the use of multi-source images to classify sea-ice conditions in the South-western Kara Sea, and in doing so simulate the alternating mode which will be available from the ASAR sensor on board Envisat. The unique data set comprises SAR images obtained from both ERS-2 and Radarsat platforms over a 12 hour-period on 23 March 1997, which also provides a high temporal resolut...

Polarisation-dependent Signatures of Ships in Envisat Ap Mode Data

The ENVISAT ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) AP (Alternating Polarisation) mode provides a new opportunity for spaceborne monitoring of vessel traffic and fishing activities. A series of data has been collected and analysed over Canadian and Norwegian waters, as well as other locations of opportunity. Three vessels were imaged during a Canadian trial and an oil production vessel in the ...
